Rudbeckia occidentalis 'Green Wizard'

Rudbeckia occidentalis 'Green Wizard'

Coneflower

An unusual western native coneflower valued for its distinctive tall, black, cone-shaped disk rather than typical yellow petals. The small green bracts at the cone base barely resemble traditional ray flowers. Slender pointed cones rise on tall, stiff stems creating striking architectural presence.

Native to western North America. Prefers moist, reasonably fertile soil for best performance. The dramatic black cones make exceptional cut flowers for minimalist arrangements and serve as conversation pieces in borders. The unusual form provides strong vertical interest and textural contrast with conventional flowering perennials.

Ruellia humilis

Ruellia humilis

Wild Petunia

A tough native wildflower with olive-green, lanceolate leaves covered in fine hairs. Lavender-blue trumpet-shaped flowers up to six centimetres long appear in clusters at the upper leaf joints. Plants emerge late in spring but flower continuously through a long season. The funnel-form blooms open for a day before fading.

Exceptionally well-adapted to dry, shallow, or rocky soils. Suitable for woodland edges, particularly on the sunny side of shrubs or tree trunks, and performs equally well in rock gardens. Full sun exposure is essential for best flowering. The extended bloom period compensates for the late spring emergence.
