Phlomis tuberosa 'Amazone'

Tuberous Jerusalem Sage

A refined selection with flowers appearing in well-spaced whorls layered vertically along sturdy upright stems. The lilac-pink blooms have a distinctive arrangement with stalks piercing through flower centers. Less foliage than the species creates a finer, more elegant appearance.

The sturdy upright stems and spaced whorls provide architectural interest even after flowering. Attractive seed structures persist into winter. Thrives in sun with any regular garden soil that drains reasonably. The reduced foliage density compared to species enhances the elegant character and flower display.

Carolina Phlox

An early-blooming phlox forming loose clumps of thin but sturdy stems with linear, glabrous, glossy green leaves. Lilac-pink flowers appear in rounded clusters in late spring and early summer. The growth habit is more open than typical garden phlox.

Notably resistant to mildew with foliage remaining attractively green throughout summer. The knotted stems and slowly increasing clumps create a refined appearance. Native to eastern United States. RHS Award of Garden Merit. The early flowering period and mildew resistance make it valuable for reliable spring to summer transition colour.

An early-blooming phlox with lustrous dark green foliage and pure white flower panicles. Plants grow stiffly upright with glossy leaves that remain attractive through summer. Flowers appear in the gap between spring and summer bloomers, providing valuable mid-season colour.

Native to eastern United States. Young foliage can be susceptible to slug damage in early season, requiring vigilance. The early flowering time and glossy foliage distinguish it from summer phlox. RHS Award of Garden Merit recipient. Thrives with consistent moisture and good air circulation.

Phlox paniculata

Phlox paniculata

Garden Phlox

10365774659895|Phlox paniculata|Garden Phlox|

A white-flowered selection with the refined, naturalistic character of the wild species. Tall upright stems bear large branched panicles of small, star-shaped, fragrant white flowers. The growth habit is more open and graceful than heavily bred cultivars.

Performs best with moisture-retentive soil and good air circulation to prevent stress and minimize mildew. The naturalistic character makes it suitable for less formal plantings and cottage gardens. The fragrance is a notable feature, especially in evening. Native form maintains the species' elegant, unimproved appearance.

Phlox paniculata 'Blue Evening'

Phlox paniculata 'Blue Evening'

Garden Phlox

10365774692663|Phlox paniculata 'Blue Evening'|Garden Phlox|

A tall phlox with large, wide-petalled lavender-blue flowers that appear almost true blue in cool evening light. The substantial flower trusses are held on sturdy stems well above the foliage. The evening colour shift creates interesting garden effects as light changes.

Requires moisture-retentive soil and good air circulation to minimize mildew risk. The height and sturdy stems make it suitable for back of border positions. Flowering period and plant height can be managed by cutting back some stems in mid-June if desired. The blue tones are uncommon in garden phlox.

A selection raised from seedlings with pure shell-pink flowers of exceptional quality. The blooms feature nicely overlapping petals with large individual flower size. Petals have lightly curved inward edges creating an attractive cupped appearance. Plants display healthy, clean, upright growth habits.

Selected from a garden seedling batch for its superior colour and form. Requires moisture-retentive soil and good air circulation to prevent mildew. Like other tall phlox, flowering can be extended or height reduced by cutting back a portion of stems in mid-June. The pure pink colour is considered the best in its class.

Potentilla 'Etna'

Potentilla 'Etna'

Cinquefoil

10365774758199|Potentilla 'Etna'|Cinquefoil|

A cultivar producing velvety red flowers about two and a half centimetres across on branched stems. The blooms emerge from slowly expanding clumps of silvery-gray, strawberry-like foliage. Unlike some cinquefoils, this selection does not self-seed, making it suitable for more controlled garden settings.

Thrives in sunny positions with freely draining soil. The informal elegance and non-seeding habit make it appropriate for refined borders while maintaining a cottage garden character. Important not to let neighbouring plants overwhelm the clumps. The silvery foliage provides attractive contrast with the deep red flowers.

Potentilla anserina

Potentilla anserina

Silverweed Cinquefoil

10365774790967|Potentilla anserina|Silverweed Cinquefoil|

A low-growing cinquefoil with silvery, pinnately divided foliage that creates attractive ground-covering mats. Yellow flowers appear on short stems through summer. The silvery leaf undersides are particularly striking. Plants spread by runners, gradually covering ground.

Native to northern regions across multiple continents. Tolerates a range of conditions from moist to moderately dry soils. The silvery foliage provides season-long interest beyond the flowering period. Suitable for rock gardens, path edges, and areas where low ground cover is desired. The spreading habit fills spaces effectively.
