Achillea filipendulina ‘Parker's Variety'

Fernleaf Yarrow
ACHILLEA (Asteraceae) yarrow

Achillea are sun loving, herbaceous perennials grown for flat flower heads held on wiry stems above finely divided foliage. They prefer freely draining soil and an open position where the leaves receive full light. Plants are generally tolerant of summer drought once established and cope well with lean, stony ground, although very rich soil can lead to softer growth and flopping.

Most forms are long lived when clumps are lifted and divided every few years to renew vigour. Flower heads are attractive to bees and other insects and can be cut for fresh or dried use. Old stems can be cut back after flowering, or left for winter structure where they remain upright.

A tall fernleaf yarrow with broad, flat heads of clear yellow carried on firm stems in midsummer. The foliage is finely divided and grey green, forming a steady clump that holds its shape in open, sunny sites. Flowers last well on the plant and in the vase and the clump responds to division every few years in spring or autumn.
